In something unexpected as an outcome! In spite of all the innumerable differences, the G 20 has delivered an astonishing achievement to get the economies back on a sound footing. An awesome package of 1.1 Trillion USD and most of it to the developing and under developed nations and that is a substantial amount. The break up including Adding 500 billion dollars to the IMF Kitty to lend to any Member Nation, 250 Billion as special drawing rights to the needy Nations, and a Stimulus of 250 Billion as a Trade Finance Package to Promote growth in exports.
In addition, they have decided to clamp down on the Tax Heavens, pun in stricter norms for credit rating agencies and most importantly accepted to continuously meet and monitor the crisis. Now it is for the Nations to also act on their own to clean up the toxic assets within their respective economies and start with a fresh book with better controls, rules, less of protectionism and break down the trade barriers and subsidies and more of government spend in infrastructure and social projects, putting money in the lowest and most needy pockets, revamp of health delivery systems to empower the common citizens…
In fact having economists such as Gordon Brown and Manmohan Singh has given the much needed direction to the Summit. These are Leaders who are totally in sync and can call a spade exactly that. Manmohan Singh did not mince words when he also laid the blame for the recession on the developed worlds lap ad also asked for revamping the IMF as it failed to predict the crisis. Instead as he rightly pointed out, the IMF only went about imposing conditions in the developing world and did nothing to stop the skewered polices of the developed world.
This is also great as we are seeing the end of the Bush led America that tended to impose rather than working jointly. And maybe the most telling statement was made about the breaking of barriers and a new way and all inclusive way when Michelle Obama and the Queen put their hands on each others waists in an extremely friendly and loving gesture, redrawing of the noble blood lines.
A right mention was also made about the terrorism emanating from the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan and the need for the world to face it together. Much more needs to be done by the Member Nations, but it is an Exercise very well begun…
