It is a pity that even after so much of activity, information and the fact that AIDS cannot spread by touch and other common interactions... the society as a whole seems to be reacting just as it used to react to leprosy before Mother Theresa…
In fact one very disturbing trend is that Doctors are at the forefront in refusing to treat HIV affected patients...even though they are the most knowledgeable…In fact this attitude only leads to the increase in children born with HIV infected at the time of birth from the Mother...a disease that could have been prevented with medical help if treated from the start of pregnancy plus more are affected from the breast feeding…another condition that is treatable…
And the more horrifying fact is that we are having terrible cases of the innocent children who for no fault of theirs are refused treatment and care for just living and combating the disease...
Its so horrible that many HIV infected children are abandoned even by relatives...as of today one in every eight children infected with this disease belongs to India…and this will only grow…many of them are orphans...having lost both the parents...many are homeless…on the streets…and living in a manner that can only increase the spread...many are not even aware…
And these homeless children at the lowest strata of society are the most sought target and end up as prostitutes, pimps, homo sexuals, thief’s ...and this is just a mass way of spreading the disease…
Another major worry is the case of the HIV widows who are boycotted and outcast by society for absolutely no fault of theirs...what did they do to deserve this and once they are thrown out where do they go...no avenues open except...wait to die and in the interim period...sex providers...beggars...
There are a lot on organizations and the government doing a commendable job...yet the social stigma needs to be done away with and the plight of the children and mothers specifically have to be addressed on a war footing…
We need to have separate AIDS hospitals and shelters with trained and caring staff...rather than using the existing hospitals as getting the existing people to change may take too long a time for this ticking time bomb...
Let not the widows suffer this plight... Let the child not pay for sins (wittingly or unwittingly committed) of others...
It Weighs on our collective conscience...Do we need another Mother Theresa...or are we capable enough?.
