A Nobel Peace Prize - A Joke at what cost?

Isn’t it ridiculous that the world lauds and celebrates the awarding of the Nobel Pace Prizes, but at what cost and what commitment?

Aung San Suu Kyi Has spent the last 13 out of 19 years in detention without even a trial and all because her party had won the elections in Burma or Myanmar, which the Military Junta did not like. Her followers are prosecuted, monks are killed and arrested – virtually there is no development and liberties for the citizens.

Yet the Military Mob continues to laugh its way to the bank, looting timber, using slave labor, filling coffers, trading in arms as well as flesh and drug trade… Oh Yes, the Developed and the Developing world does understand and is demanding justice from 19 years on and yes diplomacy does produce results, but when? Hmmm! Let’s see, the situation is unfolding and we are making progress.

And what of the Fine Lady with the Nobel Prize who does not have freedom to move, to eat, to meet her people, without her family – all this sacrifice for her country and the citizens. Well, does it even matter?

Oh man...I honestly don't know if I care about Burma or Myanmar or whatever. I think we should mind our own business. We have our own problems to solve.

I'm surprised that Burma doesn't get more media coverage considering their state of affairs. I'm equally surprised the US doesn't take stricter measures against the military government. If we truly support "democracy" and "freedom" surely we should be helping these people.

...Double standards of U.S. baffles all of us !!

America only understands the language of the gun/bombs/missiles/F-16/18/Mirage/...after all the American democracy is not a type of democracy that the world communities want.

U.S. has not signed a treaty to help the whole of the 3rd world. You people have one of the finest brains in the world with the largest democracy as well. I am sure you can solve your own issues even if US stands against you. Isn't it?? Then you won't be dealing with our "double standards".

It is better to help people in the countries like Burma of Zimbabwe who actually need to get rid of their current governments, i suppose.

Aung San Suu Kyi is held in high regard for good reason. To say she is silent of her own volition is to exhibit complete ignorance of the condition of her imprisonment.

This is a truly sad situation. The woman, the country and the world. She has the courage to stay in prison, for all these years, when, I’m sure, all she needs to do, to be released, is to stand down from her position. If she stood down from her position, I’m sure the world would soon forget the people of Burma. I don’t understand why the neighbors don’t take some kind of action.
The USA and England are thousands of miles away, you would think those people and governments next door would, at least, stand up as a group and protest, but all I hear is USA and England bashing.
I, as an American, agree that something should be done, and that the more powerful countries in this world should pay more attention to problems such as those in Burma and less to the oil producing countries in the world.
I salute this Lady, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her family. You should, too.
I will pray for this Lady, and her family and I think you should, too.

But Michael South-Asian countries are full of mess. None of them seem to be capable enough to take care of their internal issue, let alone the foreign problems. Most of them won't even know who's Aung San Suu Kyi and why is she being discussed here.

The example of Lady Aung San Suu Kyi should remind us all of basic principles of life and how fortunate those that live freely how free one is. The simple act of freely being able to choose.

It may also remind us how greed, mindful imprisonment imprisons a nation.

I admire Lady Aung San Suu Kyi and how loud the not by choice imprisoned silence from her is.

You are right Marie, but people who are awarded with the Nobel Prize are extraordinary and the world also holds some responsibility towards them. She should be helped by the world community and the country deserves to get back their favorite leader.
